APS QLD August Dinner Meeting - Molar incisor hypomineralisation: aetiology, impact and management

Presenter: Dr Stephanie Shields (Paediatric Dentist)

Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is the most common developmental tooth condition globally. Affected individuals experience increased negative outcomes and, although millions of people worldwide have MIH, its aetiology is unknown. Dr Stephanie Shields is in the final months of her PhD which utilises internationally unique prospective data to investigate potential MIH aetiological exposures. She will share her novel results regarding the effect of early childhood inflammation and environmental pollutants on MIH prevalence. This presentation will also provide an update on the impact of MIH on affected individuals and particularly their oral health related quality of life. Steph has harnessed causal inference methods to investigate these key MIH knowledge gaps, and she recently presented a symposium on these methods at the International Association of Dental Research 2025 General Session in Barcelona. Children affected by MIH can be challenging to manage successfully as it’s difficult to predict how the condition will progress over time, their restorations’ longevity and how patients will respond to treatment. Hear effective and evidence-based strategies to treat MIH associated hypersensitivity, anterior opacities and post-eruptive breakdown.

Stephanie Shields is a specialist paediatric dentist currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. She completed her Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Melbourne in 2023 and works clinically in private practice and as a lecturer and clinical demonstrator at the Melbourne Dental School. Steph has diverse clinical experience from across Australia, having worked for nearly a decade in private general practice in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Steph is currently serving as the treasurer of the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

As usual, there will be dinner and drinks. This is a great opportunity to meet colleagues and network. Thank you for supporting the APS and I am looking forward to welcoming you from 6:30am, Tuesday, August 26th at the The Brisbane Club Members' Dining Room, level 3/241 Adelaide St, Brisbane City.
