    The Grey Zone

    Presenter: Dr Tony Rotondo (Prosthodontist)

Loosely, in the aesthetic zone, our treatment choices are either direct or indirect tecnique, using either ceramic and/or resin based materials. The inclusion of orthodontics and perio-plastic procedures may also influence treatment plan. Typically, there may be a structural, mechanical or health problem to manage, however, the patients aesthetic concerns will also significantly influence the treatment possibilities. Join Dr Tony Rotondo (Prosthodontist) on a treatment planning journey in the aesthetic zone.

From Dr Rotondo: 'when I think of the grey zone, I think of a patient that has 2-3 possible treatment plans/options and, as the treating clinician, I have difficulty deciding on the most appropriate plan. By definition, there is often no right or wrong treatment plan, but I hope to present more clarity around developing the best treatment plan for a particular patient. The discussion could be as simple as choosing between resin vs ceramic dental materials and, while this may be a good place to start, I think it is much broader that that and should include treatment concepts, philosopy and multidisciplinary approaches to treatment in the aesthetic zone.'

We will start the day with a meet and greet lunch, and close it with a sundowner drinks session. This is a great opportunity to meet colleagues. Thank you for supporting the APS and I am looking forward to welcoming you from 11:30am, Friday, 25th July 2025 at the Podium Room, Rydges Hotel in South Bank.

Understanding Failure: the science of dental fractography

    Presenter: Dr Basil Al-Amleh (Prosthodontist)

This lecture explores the intricate world of dental fractography, focusing on ceramic restorations. By reviewing key findings from the dental literature, we will uncover how fractures occur, why they propagate, and what we can learn from the patterns they leave behind. Each crack tells a story, almost like interpreting a piece of abstract art, but the purpose here is scientific: uncovering the mechanics and causes behind failure.

Dental fractography is the systematic investigation of failed materials, offering clinicians a structured approach to identifying fracture origins, stress points, and material weaknesses.

Through a deeper understanding of how ceramic restorations fail, dental clinicians can refine their techniques, mitigate the risks of failure, and prolong the lifespan of their restorations. This lecture will provide practical insights into materials science, preparation strategies, and clinical applications, equipping attendees with the knowledge to enhance both the functionality and durability of their work.
